It is presented by Contemporary Historians (:10). The film was originally narrated by Orson Welles; later re-recorded by Ernest Hemingway (:25). The music score was composed by Marc Blitzstein and Virgil Thompson (:30). Hemingway had close ties to the bloody battle, crafting 31 dispatches from Spain for the North American Newspaper Alliance. His experience led to the publication of the 1940 novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’.  Created by Joris Ivens (:19), opening shots move over silver images of Spanish earth (1:01). This is the first of six reels. Farmers travel to source water back to the dry lands of the village of Fuentiduena (1:35).  By 1939; the close of the war, the Spanish terrain was ravaged by drought and war. The town arises (2:50), Spanish riders head out with goods for the market (3:55). Bread loaves are pulled from the oven and stamped with the Union label (4:55). The village is situated off Taco River (5:30). Locals run off the main road running between Valencia and Madrid (5:34). Farmers run a hoe through dirt (6:01). A pair discuss irrigation plans (6:35) and trace the ditch (6:51). Gun fire pops, the camera view run overs hilly terrain (7:38). Fuentiduena is noted on a map (7:43). Troops move ammunition and supplies (8:37). A phrase of the villagers is shared over the sound of gunfire (9:23). Troops blow a cannon (9:46). The front line is traced around Madrid (10:28). Forces wade through the trenches as gun fire rolls around (10:52). Doors are pulled and stacked from bombed out homes (11:02). Daily life of the soldier show a man getting a face shave (12:24). Music streams from the loud speaker of the Spanish Republican’s army (13:21). A soldier readies his rifle (13:37). Many were unaware how to hold a gun prior to this conflict (13:56). University City is noted on a map (14:13) followed by a panoramic shot of the city encircled by mountains (14:18). Architecture of Madrid’s University is highlighted (14:32). The stunning structure was the location of the battle of Ciudad Universitaria which forced the battle front in Madrid to stabilize for much of the war. Commander Martinez Cabrera (14:54) maintained control over the Cartagena naval base successfully preventing it from falling into rebel hands. Gunfire rings out as rebels try to relieve the clinic (15:16). House to house combat shots show bombed out city buildings (16:00) and gun snouts aiming out a small stone window (16:25). A boy scribes a letter for home (16:46). A soldier licks a paper to roll a tobacco smoke (17:05). Militia regiments assemble around sand bags (17:22). Men salute with clenched fists (17:38). Banners of the People's army (17:47) hang as Enrique Lister; the Spanish commander and military officer, addresses the assembly (17:54). Carlos Asensio Cabanillas; commander of the fifth regiment, follows (18:24). Jose Diaz (19:22) speaks as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Spain. The German writer and journalist; Gustav Regler follows (19:38). Dolores Ibarruri; ‘the passionate one” addresses the table (20:18). Her voice wheels out from the speaker for the rebels (20:34). Incredible shots of house to house combat returns (21:28). Close shots follow of a bombed out cellar housing enemy forces (22:01). A battalion heads out on leave (22:33). Wasted remains; the interior of the bombed out cellar (23:07), remains of the Duke of Alba’s Palace (23:19) and a lone female statue stands among rubble (23:25). Government militia work to salvage Spanish culture (23:33) including a copy of Don Quixote (23:46). Madrid (24:03) operated as a natural fortress due to it’s position. Forces work to rebuild its defenses (24:10). Civilians filter through as militia men stack cement stones (24:34). A railcar runs by a Spanish cinema (24:57). Troops ride atop a medic bus (25:05). A medic sign is tacked below the metro sign (25:09). The bus line was converted for medical use during the battle. Civilians wait in line for food supplies (25:22).
