Mahnke Productions demonstrates the industrial applications of air conditioning, ventilation and heating. This was part of a series of vocational guidance films produced by the company and this video’s focus on air conditioning and heating illuminates the growing importance of air conditioning and climate control in the United States as well as the new careers that emerged from its rise. The educational film contains valuable footage of air conditioning technology in the 1940s in addition to footage of students and apprentices learning their craft. Though Willis Carrier invented modern air conditioning in 1902, the technology took time before it became a fixture of American life. At first, its use was reserved for commercial and industrial settings that required a certain temperature such as printing and textile plants. Following World War II and the ensuing economic boom, air conditioning grew increasingly common in residential settings.
