Hitler was rising into power working to remilitarize German western lands near the Rhine River; an ominous and clear break of the Versailles Treaty. World War Two would erupt just three years later. In order to outdo the pervious LA Olympics in 1932, Hitler built a 100,000 seat stadium. Jesse Owens of the US would become the most successful athlete of the 1936 Games winning four gold medals. Please note: this film contains the political symbols of the Nationalist Socialist regime then in power in Germany, and the flag, swastika and eagle, may appear on screen. Periscope Film absolutely condemns the Nazi regime and affirms that that regime committed grave atrocities, war crimes, and crimes against humanity before and during WWII. These include the tragic, mass extermination of millions of innocent civilians. We preserve these films in part so that these terrible events and victims are not forgotten. This film is presented by Special Enterprises (:09). The Olympic flag waves (:26) prior to Nazi flags (:30), a strange and stark contrast. Soldiers march (1:03), crowds rush forward in the streets of Berlin (1:17) and Hitler heads to open the 11th Olympic Games (1:21). The lead ship of the Hindenburg Class; the LZ-129 Hindenburg floats above (1:26). It too would be ill fated and perish in a fiery crash in 1937 (1:26). Greek athletes march in (1:36). A shot of the stadium from above shows the jammed seats (1:40). British athletes (2:03) precede the US team (2:16). Hitler takes his post at the podium (2:22). Nazi flags wave along with the German team (2:40). Hitler salutes his team (2:44). The official Olympic flag is raised (3:11) and the torch is lit (3:46) as the games begin. For the women’s javelin throw (4:38), Hilda Fleischer takes the win. Jesse Owens (3:04) first appears to take the win for the 100 meter dash (5:27). Kenneth Carpenter of California wins the discus toss (5:38). Forest Towns took the lead for the 110 high meter hurdles (6:14) and Jack Lovelock takes the 1,500 meter race (6:47). Jack broke the world record for this classic (7:08). Earl Meadows mows over Japan winning the pole vault (7:21). During the 400 meter relay race, a German athlete drops the baton. The US team then takes the win (8:10). Glen Morris, Bob Clark and Jack Parker; all US athletes, win medals for the decathlon (8:30). The US team of Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalfe, Foy Draper and Frank Wykoff won in world record time at the 400 meter relay (8:51). Kitei Son of Japan triumphs in the 26 mile race (9:41). The massive structure built for these Olympics is shown from the outside at (9:55). The tower and clock of the Rotes Rathaus follows (10:02). Athletes are captured running the marathon outside the stadium (10:08). Men and women of the US diving team follow taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd (10:31). Rita Mastenbroek of the Netherlands won the 100 meter race (12:22). The film concludes with the eight oared boat race which would be won by the US team (12:33).
