It was produced by the Signal Corps. The film provides an overview of the aircraft's landing gear and shows how to inspect it. At (:42) shot of the gear from the aircraft during landing. At (1:03) a P-38 lands at an airport and is shown taxiing. At (1:22) the nose gear is inspected by ground crew, who demonstrate how to check the hydraulic fluid reservoir (1:46) level and refill it. At (3:08) examination of the struts is shown, checking that they are properly inflated and extended. At (3:34) further strut inspection. At (3:54) tire inflation is checked along with all flexible hydraulic lines (for the brakes). At (4:44) inspection of the wheel well to check for leaky hydraulic lines and loose lines or cables. At (5:21) a faulty / worn cable is shown. A tensiometer is used to check cable tension at (6:07). At (6:16) the wheel well is checked for chafing or interference, and the door checked. At (6:48) the strut is checked for wear or interference, or for cracks. At (7:24) further examination for cracks using a handheld magnifier glass. Any part that appears damaged should be removed and magnaflux'd. (Magnafluxing, also known as magnetic particle inspection (MPI), is a type of non-destructive testing that uses magnetic fields and iron oxide particles to detect cracks, porosity, laps, seams and other surface and subsurface defects in ferromagnetic materials.) At (7:53) in a full inspection, the plane is wing jacked and the gear assembly shaken so as to see if there are any loose components or worn bolts or bolt holes. At (8:36) worn bolt holes are shown in a brace that was removed from an aircraft. At (8:59) inspection for bent parts and test to see if the gear alights properly on the test stand (9:22). At (9:30) the wheel position indicator dial in the cockpit is shown as part of the inspection. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
