<description>Made in 1962 by Castle Films, this travelogue of Jordan and Lebanon presents a vital, full color look at many of the Holy Land's most famous sights including the Garden of Gethsemane, the Dome of the Rock, and the Mountains of Lebanon. Roman ruins are seen at Baalbek, where majestic pillars still flank the temple of Jupiter. The film shows many traditional sights including farming with primitive tools and animals such as mules and camels, etc. Pipelines are shown carrying oil through Lebanon to the sea at Sidon. Modern Beirut is seen including its international airport and downtown with high rise apartments and other buildings, as well as minarets of mosques. The fabulous night life of Beirut is seen complete with bars serving alcohol, cafes, and all-night tourist attractions with belly dancing and cabarets. Baalbek is a town east of the Litani River in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, about 85 km (53 mi) northeast of Beirut and about 75 km (47 mi) north of Damascus. It has a population of approximately 82,608, mostly Shia Muslims. It is home to the annual Baalbeck International Festival. In Greek and Roman antiquity, it was known as Heliopolis. It still possesses some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Lebanon, including one of the largest temples of the empire. The gods that were worshipped there—Jupiter, Venus, and Bacchus—were equivalents of the indigenous deities Hadad, Atargatis, and another young male fertility god. Local influences are seen in the planning and layout of the temples, which vary from the classic Roman design. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
