Task Force 77 is an aircraft carrier battle strike force of the US 7th fleet operating with three aircraft carriers, support cruisers and destroyers. The view opens on one of three attack carriers (:51). Seamen discuss up to date weather reports at the daily weather debriefing (1:13). A destroyer (1:36) is pictured. Rapid montage shots shows actions around the ship deck (1:54). An F 8E shoots off the AC carrier deck (1:58). The USS Kitty hawk is the main feature of this film (2:28). The aviation boatswain mate (2:58) discusses communications using hand movements (3:16). Work below deck is detailed (3:27). Commander Malcolm (4:20) is interviewed. Ground support conducts maintenance work (5:04). Grumman C1’s sit parked on the deck (5:39). Taxing across the deck is discussed (5:58). Torpedo’s are loaded in (6:12). A destroyer sits behind the air craft carrier (7:12). A dummy called Oscar is cast in the water for rescue rehearsal (7:16). Commander Burt Joseph Meyer of the USS Black (7:26) discusses seamanship. A lieutenant details the information traded in the ready room (8:35); including target and root. Equipment for the mission includes about 70 pounds of equipment (9:39) a pilot straps on his radio, flares and 38 Caliber pistol (9:58). Two pilots waddle to the plane strapped thick with tools (10:09). The Grumman EC2 Hawkeye (10:51) touches down on the AC carrier deck. The logistics helicopter (11:50); the SH-3 Sea King, takes off. A friendly banner notes the 'helo stop' (13:09). Another chopper touches down on the landing pad of the USS William H. Standley (DLG/CG-32)(13:37). Standley is a three year old frigate stationed about 300 miles from the Kitty Hawk. The Captain (13:53) talks about his ship and cost; about a hundred million. A missile is raised to the surface (14:17). He mentions their location in the Tonkin gulf (14:28). Terrier missiles appear (14:53). Boatswain mates (15:06) detail tasks. Ground support conducts maintenance work (15:26). Men arrive on board of the carrier by high line (16:26). The USS Porter (DD-800) arrives alongside Standley (16:31). Footage follows of the transfer of personnel (16:53); swinging high over rough sea. A Russian Trawler (17:31) is intercepted by the task force. The Captain watches the ship as each party does it's best to keep from interrupting the other’s activities (18:14). They believe the Soviet vessel is curious about Stanley's intelligence (18:36) as the Trawler crawls around the Stanley. The Radar man watches Radar blips on a scope (20:50). Pilots discuss an emergency situation during which they were forced to eject from their air craft (21:14). Pilots hit water (21:26). Harsh weather conditions berate the carrier (22:16). A seamen plays an acoustic tune over images around the air craft carrier of ground support conducting maintenance and other routine operations (23:36). As part of tradition; the catapult officer (24:13) commands a final launch before concluding his time of service. The final launch follows (24:23). Seamen witness as a man is blown to the side who had been too close to the jet exhaust (24:49). The sailor speaks about the accident after being rescued (25:01). Crewmen reunite with the rescued sailor (25:39). Captain of the USS William H. Standley (DLG/CG-32) (26:41) leaves a final note on the Navy’s ships and shipmate mission. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
