<description>Please visit the California Revealed website to see the most complete and up-to-date version of this object: https://californiarevealed.org/node/331701 . Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news on September 24, 1966. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (color, silent): NASA publicity footage of pilot Milton O. Thompson flying a wingless craft that "may be the forerunner of future spacecraft capable of maneuvering in flight to a ground landing under pilot control. The three-ton M-2 Lifting Body is air-launched from the B-52 flying at 45,000 feet. It was constructed for NASA by the Norair Division of Northrop Corporation. Powerless, it descends at a rate of 2 miles a minute to a 200 mile per hour glide, landing approximately 4 minutes after drop from a bomber." In the footage, the B-52 is shown taking off and flying at altitude as the M-2 is dropped. The M-2 then sails through the air and lands safely. Thompson emerges from the aircraft, smiling. The story was shown on the occasion of Thompson being awarded the 1966 Iven C. Kincheloe Award for Experimental Test Pilot of the Year in Los Angeles. Segment 2 (sound): KNTV reporter Dick Currier interviews Tom Croke at San Jose State about the problems facing foreign students. Croke says they face all the same issues as American students, with the addition of financial adjustments due to exchange rates, and academic issues due to a different system. Currier asks why foreign students like to dress in their national clothing. Croke says that for African students in particular, it is easier to be an African student in this town than a Negro student. Reel 2 (sound): Convention of "Have-Nots" in Pacific Grove's Washington Park. Short clips of speakers and discussion on topics of race, President Johnson, military draft. Script reads, "Monterey Bay Area's 'Have-Nots' held their own political convention today. It's a move to organize the hundreds of thousands of Californians who say they are not represented in state and federal government. About 150 people showed up for the convention. They heard ex-president of the California Democratic Council, Simon Casady, sound off against both candidates for governor in the November election....the afternoon session featured workshops under the trees and everything from urban problems, farm labor, and the war in Vietnam was hashed out. Out of 22 Democratic and Republican candidates invited to the convention from the 12th Congressional district, only one showed up. Assembly candidate Irby Bourriague turned up late and sang a couple songs to the thinning crowd..." 9/24/66 A-C 601; 9/24/66 D 601; 9/24/66 A-C 601; 9/24/66 D 601 Date: 1966-09-24 Mirrored from Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/casjhsj_000637</description>
