This was a major international rally mainly held in the Port Macquarie region of New South Wales, Australia, between 1966 and 1980. The rally attracted many of the world's leading rally drivers and factory teams including Volvo, Mini, Cortina / Ford, Volkswagen and others. 0:24 : A good driver can make the trip from Sydney to Melbourne in around 10 hours, but a rally driver will take longer due to the challenging, unsealed, and vaguely signposted tracks that only locals know. The rally covers 2,500 miles over four days through Victoria and New South Wales. 0:53: Bob Selby Wood, the work superintendent on the Sydney Opera House, is also Australia's top rally director. He is responsible for planning the big international event, ensuring the route is tough yet fair, hard yet reasonable, grueling but safe, and a supreme test of drivers, navigators, and cars. 1:18: The rally director takes to the air to complete the planning. The first Rothmans Southern Cross rally will be no Sunday picnic, with 71 crews entered, including three from overseas and Australia's best. There are also private entries from enthusiastic amateurs. 1:46 : Rick Harris and Fred Logan are two men out to give it a go in their car, reinforced with sump and petrol guards and extra lights. The route is secret until departure, with mountain roads predominating. 2:00: 62-year-old Alec Haywood enters with his elderly MGY Sports car, emphasizing the importance of participation. The BMC Works Mini Coopers are driven by some of the fastest loose surface drivers in the world. 2:21: The rally includes various cars, such as Volvos from Sweden and a Holden station wagon from Western Australia. Cars fall into four engine size classes, each divided into standard and modified. 3:45: The rally starts at Sydney's Giant Roselands shopping center, with the first car being the Japanese Prince Gloria 6 driven by Carl Kennedy. The teams receive their first route instructions at the start. 4:14 : The rally comprises a series of fast special stages, with points lost for every 15 seconds late. The Avis Rent Car entry includes a special women's section. 4:28 : The rally is tough, with 31 of the field failing to finish. Legendary figure Jack Murray is among the participants, known for his practical jokes. 5:00 : The rally continues through various stages, with participants facing challenges such as collapsed hydrolastic suspension and tough special stages. 6:00 : The rally progresses through the Blue Mountains and small country towns, with participants facing various challenges and mishaps. 7:00 - 8:00: The rally continues. The leaders are averaging over 65 mph in some sections. 8:00 : The rally progresses through various stages, The top crews have clean sheets with no points lost. They head out with brilliant quartz iodine lights. 8:09: The crews embark on the first special stage, a 44-minute challenge near Wangala Dam. Every 15 seconds late costs a point. 8:13 : Navigating the dirt roads requires precision; a mistimed half-second can spell disaster. 8:17: The Keem Roberts Cortina ends its rally with a crash, but no serious injuries. There are still five mishaps to come. 8:29: Drivers and navigators start feeling the strain. The navigator begins to feel physically sick from the rough ride. 8:46: Town of Jugiong. The tough Volkswagens are still among the leaders. 9:00 : Thick black mud. Harris and Logan in the Cortina get stuck. 9:16 Harry Firth races through, brushing a tree on the way. The leaders are averaging over 65 mph in some sections, and the pace of the rally is increasing. At 23:26, Ferguson runs into a tree which takes his Volkswagen out of contention. 25:00: The rally concludes at Roselands. Only forty cars manage to finish. Harry Firth and Graham Hoinville win in the Ford Cortina GT. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
