<description>The German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies, or GREAT, is a high-resolution far-infrared spectrometer that finely divides and sorts light into component colors for detailed analysis. Mounted on the 2.5-meter infrared telescope installed in the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) flying observatory, GREAT collected its first science spectra on April 6, 2011. SOFIA is operated by NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center and the German Aerospace Center. The aircraft is based at Hangar 703 in Palmdale, CA.
