The film opens with a cabin cruiser boat headed toward New Caledonia. The passengers are in bathing suits (:23-:39). A man drives off the boat and comes up with two lobsters (:39-:58). The boat lands, and the passengers get off for a picnic on the beach. The lobsters are cooked on a grill and a large basket of food is opened and served (1:00-2:50). Noumea is the capital of New Caledonia (3:00). People in 1960s fashions walk by stores. Window shopping includes clothes and French perfumes (3:13-3:30). Fiji was still a British outpost when the film was made; it became independent on October 10, 1970. The changing of the guard, whose uniforms include skirts, at Government House is shown (3:47-4:10). A native club dance is shown (4:13-5:08). The traffic policeman wears a skirt or kilt (5:09). Duty-free shops include a window full of 1960s cameras, transistors, and video equipment, including Canon and Pentax SLRs (5:35). Rainbow Reef is popular for its coral reefs, seen through the a glass-bottom boat (5:41-5:59). Divers bring up various coral from which the guide shakes out small fish, a banded sea snake, and a turtle (6:00-7:35). A woman in a bikini walks onto Castaways Island and sits in the sand (7:45). A man blows a conch horn to signify the start of a picnic meal (8:18-8:40). This passage takes you on a vivid journey through the tropical islands of the Pacific, starting with New Caledonia and moving to Fiji. It highlights the serene beauty of white sandy beaches, lush coral reefs, and abundant seafood that create an idyllic paradise reminiscent of Mediterranean charm. The islands’ volcanic origins contrast with their peaceful present, while local culture—from French colonial history to vibrant Fijian dances—adds rich layers to the experience. Visitors are invited to explore underwater treasures, enjoy duty-free shopping, and savor the simplicity and romance of island life.
