<description>"Civil Engineers of the Navy" dates to 1959 and was made by Milner Productions. This U.S. Navy recruiting film shows the activities of the U.S. Civil Engineer Corps and the Naval Construction Battalions known as the Seabees. The film includes footage of Port Hueneme, home of the Seabees in this era, and shows the responsibilities of officers in the corps who supervise Navy base utilities including maintenance and operation of the sewer and electrical systems, transportation systems, building management and Navy housing, and more "public works" agenda items. At the 12 minute mark some of the more interesting aspects of engineer careers are shown, as the roles of a combat engineer are shown. This includes construction of air fields, oil lines, phone and communications systems, etc. Overseas work of Naval engineers in the world at large is also shown including at the Bureau of Yards and Docks in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) manages the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of shore facilities globally. Comprising skilled engineers, CEC officers handle public works, naval construction, and oversee Seabees, while also serving in advisory roles. They manage infrastructure, utilities, and large-scale projects, offering young engineers diverse experience, leadership opportunities, and postgraduate education for military and civilian careers. 0:25: Navy supports national interests by controlling seas, requiring extensive shore facilities. 0:48: Facilities include shipyards, air stations, and missile bases worldwide. 1:29: CEC, under Bureau of Yards and Docks, executes these tasks with qualified engineers. 2:02: CEC includes diverse engineering disciplines beyond civil. 2:20: Recruits young engineers annually, demanding high standards. 2:43: Non-NROTC candidates attend 16-week Officer Candidate School in Newport. 3:18: Graduates train in Port Hueneme, California for two months on management techniques. 3:46: Officers assigned globally based on skills and Navy needs. 4:23: CEC assignments are varied and challenging. 4:41: Shore Establishment.
