<description>Dating to the early 1960s, this episode of TRUE ADVENTURE presents the job done by the U.S. Coast Guard, demonstrating their heroic and methodical search and rescue techniques. The re-enacted storyline, which uses official U.S. Navy and Coast Guard footage combined with re-enactments, involves a young couple who have gone out to the Pacific Ocean off Santa Monica Bay in their pleasure boat, only to have the engine quit and run out of battery, so communication is impossible. After not arriving back on shore when they had said they would, the Coast Guard is notified and the search operation begins. The film features many Coast Guard vessels of different types and sizes, and air ships engaged in the search. It also includes footage of the Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw and USCGC Casco WAVP-370. A Grumman HU-16 Albatross flying boat is also seen at the 16:20 mark, and the USCG Cape Newagen WPB 95318 at 22:20. In the end, the hapless couple remains adrift for over 24 hours before being rescued. The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw, (sold commercially under its Sikorsky model number, S-55) was a multi-purpose helicopter used by the United States Army and United States Air Force. It was also license-built by Westland Aircraft as the Westland Whirlwind in the United Kingdom. United States Navy and United States Coast Guard models were designated HO4S, while those of the U.S. Marine Corps were designated HRS. In 1962, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Marine Corps versions were all redesignated as H-19s like their U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force counterparts. Finally at time code 21:38 they are discovered and towed by a Coast Guard helicopter toward land and are intercepted by a Coast Guard cutter and brought safely to port.
