It features mock-ups of designs put forward by the legendary Syd Mead at an exhibition displaying US Steel’s innovations for the 1960s. United States Steel Corporation, more commonly known as US Steel, is an American integrated steel producer with headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company was founded on March 2, 1901, by the merger of Carnegie Steel and the National Steel Company. Their production operates mainly in the United States of America and Central Europe. US Steel produces and sells steel products, including flat-rolled and tubular products for industries such as automotive, construction, consumer, electrical, industrial equipment, distribution, and energy. Their operations also include iron ore and coke production facilities. The company is still producing and selling today, and throughout history, the company has supplied steel and erected many famous structures across the United States, hereunder: the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the New Orleans Superdome, the United Nations Building in New York City, the Vehicle Assembly building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Station in Florida, and more. “Automotive Suppliers to Perspective” title banner and credits (00:08). A recreation of a 1890s bar (00:26). A painting of naked bodies (00:41). Views of the bar (00:46). A piano player (00:56). A woman wearing pink is performing a dramatic storytelling of the founding of US Steel in 1901 (01:11). A woman dressed in a 1920s style shimmery blue dress continues a dramatic storytelling and musical performance of the company in the 1920s (04:28). A stage curtain with a dark silhouette dancing in front as the song provides information about US Steel’s development after the 1920s, focusing on money-saving ideas and new levels of strength for safety (07:38). A woman dressed in a 1950s-60s style yellow dress continues a dramatic storytelling and musical performance of the company in the 1950s-60s (10:44). A representative from US Steel is showing innovations to reduce the cost of production, including interchangeable moldings, the design of sheet metal components, mill forms to minimize implants forming, and using the widest range of tooling to minimize costs and the weight of the automobile (13:07). The representative demonstrates the first innovation through various model cars and trucks (15:16). The representative demonstrates the second innovation through the same model cars and trucks (16:46). The representative demonstrates the third innovation through the same model cars and trucks (17:50). The representative demonstrates the fourth innovation through the same model cars and trucks (18:44). The representative shows a model built entirely from interchangeable US Steel parts, one side built as a family vacationer and the other built as a panel truck, to demonstrate the concept of the interchangeability (21:38). The representative shows a model of a passenger car made from interchangeable parts, demonstrating design variables (24:07). The representative concludes his exhibition and resumes the four US Steel innovations (25:29). He promotes a booklet titled “Perspective” (26:00), which incidentally featured designs by futurist Syd Mead. Views of the US Steel model car exhibition (26:27). The representative thanks the viewer (26:42). Recap footage of the performances and the exhibition (26:48). “Automotive Suppliers to Perspective” title banner and credits (27:33). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
