As the dominant telecommunications company in the United States, Bell Telephone Systems (today AT&amp;T) was a pioneer in advancing communication technology, from rotary phones to touch-tone dialing, and often used creative films and commercials to educate the public about its services. Through a series of comedic historical reenactments, the film explores how communication mishaps in history might have been avoided if telephones had existed. From Ancient Greece to Colonial America, American actor and comedian Bob Newhart and his troop of Ring-a-ling Players demonstrate tips such as identifying oneself on calls, answering promptly, and effectively relaying messages. Woman from “Trojan Defense Ministry” frustrated on phone because she doesn’t know whereabouts of person she should transfer call to (11:12). Woman wearing colonial-era Dutch clothing belonging to the Van Winkle family (Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle”) answers phone (11:55). Lady Godiva (played by actress Francine York) addresses crowd of protesters (12:55). Secretaries of a Lord of Coventry and Lady Godiva exchange words over phone (14:48). Scenario plays out again this time rather than secretaries calling each other, Lady Godiva places call herself to Lord Coventry however he refuses to answer (15:48). Paul Revere’s secretary answers Bell System Touch Tone Phone but misremembers message, passes along wrong information (17:11). Newhart speaks on phone with “Mrs. Beanstalk” from Jack and the Beanstalk (19:04).
