Created by North American Aviation in 1949 to promote their newest jet aircraft, this silent film features the B-45 Tornado bomber and the F-86 Sabre, as well as the FJ-1 Fury. The North American B-45 Tornado 4-jet bomber is shown at (:24). It was the first operational jet to enter service with the United States Air Force as well as the very first multiengine jet bomber to have ever been refueled in midair. These planes entered into service in 1948. It is filmed gracefully taking off from the runway (:50). An aerial view from a plane above it is provided (2:36) as its wings spread over mountainous regions. The next plane to be shown off is the F-86 Sabre fighter (4:14) also known as the Sabrejet. It was a trans sonic jet fighter aircraft developed in the 1940’s. The F-86 was the U.S.’s first swept wing fighter that was able to keep up with the Soviet MIG-15 in air combat during the Korean War. This jet fighter fought in some of the earliest jet versus jet battles in history and was considered of the best fighter aircrafts in the Korean War. The pilot is seen climbing into its cockpit (4:23) and as it heads down the runway (4:41). As it soars into the sky, the jet conducts barrel rolls in the air (5:53). This is followed by the North American FJ-1 Fury (7:21) which is a carrier-based jet fighter. This was the first operational jet aircraft used in the US Navy. It had a short service life though it had won in the Bendix Trophy Race for Jets in September of 1948. This craft is filmed while conducting barrel rolls in air (7:55) and as a group of them fly in formation past an aircraft carrier (8:42). It touches down with an abrupt halt (9:51) and a submarine surfaces nearby (11:38). The film concludes with a shot from above the craft looking down into the pilot’s cockpit (12:13). After a development period starting in late 1944, the North American B-45 Tornado first flew in 1947. The aircraft was plagued by technical problems, mostly to do with engine reliability, which was very poor among all jets in this time period. The aircraft nevertheless found a useful role during the Korean War. During the early 1950s, a total of 40 B-45s were modified for strategic bombing missions, so as to carry nuclear weapons. It was superseded by the larger and more capable Boeing B-47 Stratojet. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
