It recounts the story of a man named “Mike” who drinks heavily at a party, and insists on driving home. The consequences are steep and along the way, viewers learn about Blood Alcohol Level (also known as BAC or Blood Alcohol Content), techniques police use to verify a driver’s inebriation such as the breathalyzer, and the reasons why driving drunk is so dangerous. This film was produced by legendary social guidance filmmaker Sid Davis in cooperation with the Monterey Park Police Department. (00:32) Title: Alcohol and Red Flares (00:53) A group of people drink alcohol at a house party (01:53) A drunk man "Mike" prepares to leave the party and drive home with his wife (02:46) He struggles to get in the car and start it (03:32) He struggles to drive his Chevrolet Chevelle and then crashes into trash cans on the sidewalk (03:55) The officer asks him to step out of the car and he struggles to stand up (04:06) Mike is arrested and the officers give him options for assessing his Blood Alcohol Level. (04:26) He blows into a breathalyzer at the station, a photometric device that measures blood alcohol level from a sample of breath from deep in the lungs. It gives quick and accurate results. (04:55) Mike is put through a sobriety test at the station while being recorded by a camera. (05:08) He fails to walk in a straight line. (05:23) Mike is placed in the "drunk tank" with other men. (06:00) Now sober, he is fingerprinted and his mug shot is taken. (06:13) Mike pleads not guilty and goes to trial (06:18) Footage of Mike failing the sobriety test (06:29) The judge asks Mike if he would like to change his plea, he agrees to plead guilty. (06:49) Mike's blood alcohol level was .15%, intoxicated. (07:03) The judge recommends he attends a course, if he completes it and is not re-arrested for DUI, then he will have his fine suspended. Mike agrees. (07:43) Mike attends a class for motorists with previous DUI violations. (08:19) The instructor asks the class to each recount the hours preceding their arrests. (08:44) The flashback begins. A man explains that he had a few beers at the beach but didn't consider this to be an issue. However he drives erratically. (09:20) A woman explains that she had a few "social drinks" and then didn't see a stop sign nor the police car nearby. (09:40) Another man can't recall what happened (09:55) A man explains he didn't feel drunk but then drove into a parked car. (10:15) The instructor explains alcohol is a depressant and shows a film demonstrating the effects of alcohol on the body. (11:35) The six stages of drinking are explained, ranging from hardly influenced to unconscious. (12:40) The film explains that alcohol causes impaired vision, particularly at night. It also impairs reaction time, even if the driver is not legally intoxicated. (14:13) The film recommends having one drink per hour (15:04) The instructor shows another short film about the dangers of drunk driving. (15:57) Footage of bloody and brutal crash scenes. (18:21) The class is attentive to the instructor, including Mike. (19:02) The narrator explains the effectiveness of these classes. 99% of attendees are not re-arrested. (19:23) However, Mike drives drunk once again. On the highway, he struggles to see. He crashes into a tree. (20:15) It cuts back to the original house party. It is then revealed this was all just a nightmare. He decides to take a cab home because he is drunk. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
