The film follows the Young Skulls, as they tramp through swampy city streets and local grocery stores, harassing pedestrians, throwing parties and conducting a ritualistic beating. The nature and use of aggression is uncovered through their behavior. The film delivers studies on aggression in nature; it's necessity and how various species use it. It also includes studies such as the frustration- aggression theory put forward by Dollard in 1939. Pseudo speciation; the use of factitious labels and boundaries put forth from one group to another group within the same species; it's use and effect in gang life as well as on in society as a whole is featured. It was written and produced by Dr. Stanley Milgram (:21); a prominent social psychologist best known for his controversial 1960’s electric shock experiments. A blueprint of the 'shock machine' is featured; a tool he would use to uncover 65% of his test subjects would cause harm under authority direction. Young Skull members; patched up thick; shoulder through New York alleys (:37). Boys chant and pound fists along the side strip past Lewis Liquors (:55). Aggression is defined (1:20). A 1965 Ford LTD drives up and a gang boy whistles (1:41). Members bounce onto the hood with metal bats (1:49). The narrator muses over reasons for the incident (2:06). He explores the need for aggression in nature. Crabs face off as one invades another’s territory (2:35). Chants roll from the sidewalk (3:11) the group utilizes an aggressive aura. A member spits about physically assaulting a Blue Angles member (3:21). Opposing gangs collide (3:47). Gangs use symbols and specific language (4:00). Pseudo speciation in society is covered; a protest flag about race unfolds over the grass (4:16). Middle class students host a protest (4:26). A movie theater patron butts ahead in line (4:46). Patrons wave arms displaying aggression (4:52). A challenger questions authority within the gang (5:11). Leadership re-asserts authority (5:33). The ‘displaced aggression theory’ (9:30) follows. An experiment shows how aggression escalates (10:13). The control setting is displayed (10:22). The employee is instructed to pick up a radio from another room. A charity display for Project Hope hangs on the wall (10:33). Severe frustration is introduced (10:50). The subject pounds his fist on the table (11:02) plucking money from the donation box (11:21). A man and woman fight at a phone booth (11:56). Legitimate (12:06) and illegitimate (12:15) frustration are discussed. A watch buyer explodes (12:27). Freud (13:08) explained the inevitably of aggression in human life. Young boys detail stories (13:54) of abuse at home. Aggression grows as boys become men (14:18). Television screens show scenes of violence at home (14:57). The 1951 Bandura Bobo Doll Experiment (15:05) showcased the effect of witnessing violence on youth. Youth witness at least 10,000 acts of violence (15:22). A girl throws punches to a doll (15:37) following watching a violent film. Gang member’s crowd a police van (16:08). Morton Bard's program is mentioned (16:13). Gang members discuss relations with the police (16:53). The Milgram shock machine follows (18:27). Shocks are set to 150 watts (19:23).
