The captain of this vessel is Warwick M. Tompkins of Gloucester, Massachusetts, who later wrote a book about the journey entitled "50 South to 50 South".  For decades, the book has inspired many to seek out their own nautical adventures. The film is rich in imagery of the age of sail, including shots of sailors at work, Gloucester harbor, a woman at the helm of the vessel, a massive storm, becalmed, images of the Altantic and Pacific Oceans, and the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. The voyage begins with the fading New England coast as the ship sails into the open sea, encountering leaping porpoises and warm waters. The captain’s fearless children, Ann and Little Commodore, thrive aboard the vessel, enjoying life at sea in both fair and foul weather. Along the way, the crew partakes in a traditional Neptune ceremony upon crossing the equator and stops in Rio de Janeiro to resupply while marveling at its breathtaking harbor. As they push southward, they encounter sea lions, whales, and sharks before reaching the infamous Cape Horn, where they battle hurricane-force winds and towering waves. The storm subsides, and calmer waters bring new thrills, including troll fishing and the capture of a massive marlin. Continuing northward into the Pacific, the ship enjoys sunshine and favorable winds, passing colonies of seals before spotting the California coastline.
