This particular film showcases how wind affects flight, attack angles and the path of projectiles. The animated film uses aircraft and anti-aircraft blimps / barrage balloons to make its points. The animated scenes are accompanied by curt British narration. The film was created for weapons training purposes, and includes a series of various wind direction calculations. It opens with the Admiralty Crown copyright; Britain’s official photograph copyright company (:11). The film was produced and photographed by Technicolor LTD in collaboration with HMS Excellent (:21). The first segment details principles of wind direction using a barrage balloon (:38). British police aim a cannon (:40). An observer aims his binoculars (:45). British aircraft swing in (:48). Wind direction and push is discussed (:57). The target aircraft and path is traced through gun sights (1:05). Birds eye view (1:34) shows the actual direction of a small plane (1:38). A series of examples follow (2:30). Guns crew maneuver across a British aircraft carrier (3:01). An animation displays the direction of the ship in the water (3:17). True wind and apparent wind are discussed (3:31). A gun crewmen sticks a finger out to check wind direction (3:54).  Apparent wind is discussed in relation to the line of sight (4:04). The aircraft is blown sideways against the vessel (4:16). Two planes buzz by in demonstration (4:55). A note discusses aiming leeward (5:05). Example equations follow (5:22) for various knot corrections. Gun sights aim on a plane showing where the craft is headed (6:01). Examples detail various wind directions and speeds (6:42). A two-man gun example follows (6:55). An air gunman (7:20) argues the difficulty of making wind direction calculations while in an actual air fight. Another animation shows the arc of fire (7:46) around a ship at sea. The bow beam and quarter sections are broken up (8:11).  Gun sights and knot corrections follow (9:04). The ship alters course (9:23).  An example shows a low level bomber and ship at sea intersecting paths (9:42). The same example follows while looking through gun sights (10:01). The gunner and veteran instructor discuss attacks facing up or down wind (10:20). An example unfolds in animation (10:46). Rate of approach is detailed (10:57). Another example uses a dive bomber (11:25). Two-gun sight views of the same scenario follow (12:58) using a 200 knot aircraft and apparent wind of 30 knots (13:07). Diving aircraft (13:35) must account for lift. This film was photographed in Technicolor (14:01).  Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
