<description>Produced by the Louisiana Association for Mental Health and filmed in Chicago, IL with the help of the Chicago Police Department, The Cry For Help is a 1962 training film from documentary filmmaker George C. Stoney and is part of a series of films Stoney made about what police face when dealing with people with mental health issues. The Cry For Help shows how police officers should and should not deal with people who contemplate or attempt suicide, ranging from people in jail trying to commit suicide to law-abiding citizens killing themselves for a variety of reasons. The film opens with men waiting around in jail cells. A police officer performs mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a man in cell who hung himself (01:22). A man is brought in to jail, handcuffed, by two police officers (03:15). His tie and belt are removed by officers before he is put into a cell. A police officer directs traffic at a busy city intersection (04:46). An unconscious woman is carried out of a building by police officers after a suicide attempt (05:30). At a hospital, two police officers update a nurse on the woman’s status (06:30). Police officers carry a woman who committed suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills out of her home (10:41). A police officer drives off on his motorcycle after learning he has a serious health condition (14:14). The film shows several scenarios of suicide, including a policeman using his service revolver, a woman cutting her wrist, and a teenage girl taking pills. At a hospital, the teenage girl appears to have her stomach pumped (20:31). A man walks along a city street at night (23:01). An officer at the police department switchboard takes a call from a woman who attempted suicide by cutting her wrist (24:11). The film shows a scenario of what not to do as the two responding officers mock the woman and treat her with disdain. An off-duty police officer races his motorcycle through downtown Chicago and into Soldier Field Stadium (27:40). He races his motorcycle around the stadium’s track while on-duty officers who followed him take a hands-off approach and watch him ride (28:30). The film ends with the man getting into a police car and the officers leaving Soldier Field.
