The film shows footage of mountains and animals interspersed with descriptions and quotes on title cards. The film begins with a title card reading, “Jasper National Park Alberta, Canada opened to the public in 1922” (0:10). This is followed by a card saying, “Edmonton to Jasper hi-way horse power vs. motor power” (0:15). A man in a cowboy hat and overalls stands next to some horses; a muddy road with ruts is shown. Another card reads, “In serene majesty Mount Edith Cavell lives ___ snow-crown into the blue” (0:27), followed by a view of the mountain, one of the park’s most famous. At 0:43, a card with “Angel Glacier covers the saddle Mt. of ___ and Mt. of sorrow.” The glacier flows down Mt. Edith Cavell and is shaped like an angel spreading its wings. An avalanche from Angel Glacier is shown at 1:31, with a card reading, “A thundering avalanche falls from Angel Glacier.” A woman sits on a rock at 1:58. A log cabin; mountain peaks; a card with a moose on it and the quote “I feed him from my hand/ his trust is beautiful to see/ the timid deer with new-gained faith/disputes the path with me” (2:21). A deer walks through the woods; a hand reaches out to feed it. At 2:58, a sign for Athabaska River & Falls. At 3:30, a card reads, “We “shoot” the wary mountain goat,” followed by mountain goats running away. At 3:49, a card with “Athabaska Glacier covering Mt. Athabaska from peak to base with glittering snow.” At 4:04, “Columbia Icefield “Mother of Rivers” caught between peaks on the ___ of the world.” At 4:13, “Returning from the Columbia ice fields at sunset,” followed by a waterfall, a deer in the woods, and sunset. The Jasper Park Lodge (5:10) and bungalows. At 5:23, a card reads, “As man reflects his character and age upon his face so does the mountain pool reflect the peaceful grandeur of the mighty peaks.” Pyramid Mountain (5:32). At 5:44, a card with “The beaver engineer and water conservationist,” followed by a beaver swimming in the river. “Maligne Lake a jewel in magnificent setting” (6:33). Mount Julian (6:57), Mount Unwin (7:37), and other mountains around the lake. The man from the beginning of the film on a canoe dock with a dog next to him (8:27); moose in a field. The Maligne Lake Chalet and Guest House (9:12). At 9:43, “The sunset guilds the western sky to lay a last caress upon forgotten day.” Mount Warren (9:50). At 10:42, “Leaving Maligne Lake for Shovel Pass,” followed by horseback riders going over a bridge towards Shovel Pass. Park visitors eat and relax at a campsite. “O the garden most lovely to me is one where few men have trod; ’tis a meadow high up in the mountains, and I call it the garden of God” (11:11). Wild flowers; “big horn sheep the sportsman’s delight” (11:46). At 11:50, “A sheep with massive horns a flock of ewes, behind him grouped — the very rim adorns.” Bighorn sheep graze. “We rough-it at Shovel Pass camp” (12:37). A man exits a tent with camping gear; a woman pours water to wash with. Visitors and horses hike up rocky Shovel Pass. “200 miles of snowy peaks — at a glance!” (14:15). A panoramic view of several mountain peaks. “Jasper is a sparkling world. No pen can picture it, no brush can catch its colors. But in the hearts of those who see it, its beauty lives forever.” (15:12). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
