<description>Note: This is a short version. See the playlist for the full documentary. "Nuremberg: It's Lesson for Today" was made by the Office of Military Government for Germany in May of 1947 under the auspices of the OSS Field Photographic Unit headed by John Ford. In the summer of 1945, Ford dispatched Stuart Schulberg to Europe to hunt for Nazi films that could be used at the Nuremberg trial. Stuart's older brother Budd followed. During a frenzied 4-month period, the Schulberg brothers and their colleagues scoured the German-occupied territories for footage. The films and photos they presented in the courtroom played a role in convicting the Nazis on trial. Subsequently, Stuart Schulberg wrote and directed, "Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today", which became the official documentary about the trial. Note: This is a shortened version of the original film; you can see an hour-long version via our playlist. This film recounts the aftermath of World War II and the Nuremberg Trials, where leading Nazi officials were prosecuted for war crimes, crimes against peace, and crimes against humanity. It begins by illustrating the devastation of post-war Europe and the urgent need for justice. The trials exposed the systematic atrocities committed by the Nazis—including mass murder, forced labor, genocide, medical experimentation, and the exploitation of both foreign populations and German citizens deemed "useless." Testimonies, such as that of Rudolf Höss, detailed the scale of extermination at Auschwitz and the Nazi regime’s orchestrated efforts to annihilate the Jews of Europe. Key figures were found guilty, with many sentenced to death or imprisonment. The trials not only answered the world’s questions about Nazi crimes but also established a precedent: those who start wars or commit atrocities will be held personally accountable. Nuremberg remains a symbol of justice and a stark warning against tyranny. 0:00 –Main titles.
