Operating under National Audubon rules, 5 teams covered an area with a radius of 7 1/2 miles from a specified point in the central area of the 100,000 acre refuge. Florida Audubon Society Executive Director C. Russell Mason, was in charge of the count. One of the team leaders was internationally known ornithologist Allan D. Cruickshank of Cocoa, FL. Wildlife Refuge Manager was Hal O'Connor.
