Hahn shows the Chaco region of Paraguay, exploring the ranch of American Bob Eaton, featuring Ligua Indian vaqueros. Also shown is a hand-cranked radio "bringing civilization to the wild Chaco." Shows the Mennonite settlement of Filadelfia, old streetcar in Asunción, and more. The film concerns itself chiefly with the El Chaco or the western division of the country Special emphasis is laid upon the modern pioneering necessary for full development of this area  Provides good coverage of this little known South American country especially its history its people and its economic development Attention is given to agriculture and cattle raising and to the work of the Mennonite group who went to Paraguay in 1930 to help build a pioneer community in the undeveloped land. Landlocked Paraguay is divided into two major sections by the Rio Paraguay. West of the river is the broad, flat, sparsely inhabited Chaco region. To the east and south are the more settled and populated areas. Skyscrapers of the capital of Asuncion (1:07) are a mingling of ancient and modern architecture (1:14). The capital was founded in 1537. A city trolley (1:14). A Guarani woman marches down with a clay pot atop her head (1:34). Pink trees blossom alongside streets (1:40) and a turquoise car runs through. Steamers from Buenos Aires (1:56). Cotton bales are pulled up by crane (2:21) for shipment down the river. Animal hides are loaded out; exported from Paraguay's ranches (2:29). The Rio Paraguay slices country in two (2:40). Farmers drag oxen and carts across the Chaco (3:03) for the foothills of the Bolivian Andes (3:14). Carts and horses wade into the water (3:23). Lumber jacks hack at the base of the Quebracho tree (3:50). Oxen drag logs onto flat cars (4:04). A narrow railroad hauls the logs to the mills (4:21). Logs are carted up (4:37). Town shops of the Filadelphfia colony follow up (4:49). The Mennonite sect traveled here from Germany (4:55). A silver spotted Peruvian draft (5:10) follows up. Female members of the tribe sweep (5:30) and wash laundry by hand (5:37). Women often did much of the work around the village. A cobbler smacks on a pair of shoes for colonists (5:57). Wagon makers work on large wheels (6:02). Horses churn dirt over land prepared for peanuts (6:10). Peanut hullers spit out nuts (6:24). Shelled nuts are carted off for a factory (6:41). A farmer chops at the base of a date palm (7:16). Hands pick at the castor bean (7:22). A small unidentified passenger plane touches down (7:51). Bob Eaton greets ranch foreman Martinez (8:07). A young local boy offers the men herbal tea (8:32). The men look at jaguar skins (8:38) and taxidermied heads (8:47). They head out to inspect work on the Asuncion (8:57). A calf balks at being roped in (9:09). Bob works with the Hereford and Shorthorn breeds. A boy sits on a fat calf and it gets branded (9:22). Vaqueros under wide brim hats on a cattle drive (9:35). Lingua Indians work closely with the rancher (9:55). Bob works with a two-way radio, his horse hangs his head (10:08) with agents at the stockyard. A cowboy winds the generator (10:12). The vaquero’s horses bump against one another in the pen (10:21). Riders saddle up (10:31); steers are counted as they stream out of the pen (10:40). Cattle feet stick in muddy terrain (11:05). The herd takes a midday graze (11:25). Vaqueros snack in the saddle (11:37) and settle in for camp (12:06). Cattle horns move through high grasses (12:41). They push through the swamps (12:52). At the Rio Paraguay (13:16) cattle move into a corral. A massive barge (13:34) takes the herd to a landing place above the stockyard. Steers appear jammed up in barge pens (14:07). They wade out for the stock yards (14:12). Cattle horns splash in the water (14:32). Steers head from the river (15:29) and for the stock yard (15:39) where they will be processed for shipment for other portions of the world. Vaqueros head back for the home ranch (15:54). End.
