Carrington Goodrich of Columbia University, CHILDREN OF CHINA shows daily life in a rural village in Western China, with an emphasis of course on children. From families having a breakfast meal together (4:30) to attending school (6:00), the film makes an effort to show how similar Chinese lives are to those in the West. Some of the items shown in the film include an abacus, traditional Chinese lutes, and a typical Chinese farm with animal-powered plows. As the narrator states, most Chinese in the village are farmers. Dr. L. Carrington Goodrich was a leading scholar of the Ming Dynasty and the Dean Lung professor emeritus of Chinese at Columbia University and the author of several books on China, including ''A Short History of the Chinese People,'' published in 1944 and for years a standard textbook. He was the editor in chief of ''Dictionary of Ming Biography: 1368-1644,'' a multivolume history that involved 70 scholars from Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States.
