At 0:20, metal machinery whirs along while the narrator begins a history of the primary objective of the US to develop capabilities for manned operations in space since 1961 (0:27-1:00). The Apollo manned lunar mission is described as a key element of this objective. Manned Gemini and Apollo missions are on the horizon, according to the film. The John F. Kennedy Space Center is described along with its programs and objectives (1:35-2:35). Data and astronomical phenomena are collected at this location in Florida. This film provides information about the flight crews and mission details that are ongoing during the 1960s. Starting at 03:22, footage from the Gemini missions is shown including the astronauts and images from outer space captured during the flights. Expanded capabilities on the ground are reflected with footage of command centers and NASA employees and flight crews working to collect new data and complete missions safely (3:35-4:20). At 4:30, the three main phases of Apollo are described as Saturn I, Apollo Saturn I-B, and Apollo Saturn V. Primary objectives including collecting environmental data are outlined (4:45-7:00). IBM was responsible for building the instrument unit and will be used in both Saturn I and Saturn V. North American Aviation built the command module and it serves as crew quarters and host of flight operations. Built by Grumman, the lunar module spacecraft will send two members of the flight crew to the moon. This film was created in 1966 ahead of further scheduled flights in 1967. The Marshall Space Flight Center and other facilities are mentioned and described from 12:00 until the segment ends. The film closes with a zoom in to real footage of the moon taken during missions.
