<description>Made by the International Film Foundation in the 1930s, FLEET HO shows the U.S. Navy conducting a fleet exercise. Battleships, cruisers and destroyers are seen. At 1:00, the crew of the USS Colorado is seen at muster. The USS Colorado (BB-45) was a battleship of the United States Navy that was in service from 1923 to 1947. She was the lead ship of the Colorado class of battleships and the third naval ship named for the 38th state. At 1:25, the Colorado drops anchor. At 1:35, an biplane is launched from an aircraft carrier. At 2:30, the aircraft carrier is seen retrieving planes. At 2:40, a "South Sea isle" is shown, most likely Hawaii. USS Colorado visited Hawaii in 1937, although this film appears that it could have been created before that date (so this date is just a guess). The performance includes a child hula dancer. At 4:00, a U.S. Navy dirigible is seen flying overhead, either USS Macon or USS Akron. At 4:30 a submarine is seen. At 5:40, a title card explains that an earthquake has occurred and that the Navy is rushing to provide food and medicine to victims. Aircraft assist in this effort. Most likely this is the 1931 Nicaragua earthquake. The 1931 Nicaragua earthquake devastated Nicaragua's capital city Managua on 31 March. It had a magnitude of 6.0, and killed 2000 people. A major fire started and destroyed thousands of structures, burning into the next day. The film ends with the crew of the Colorado at mass signing "Onward Christian Soldier". Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. We collect, scan and preserve 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have films you'd like to have scanned or donate to Periscope Film, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via the link below. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA.
