<description>Based on the Charles Cahill film Red Light Return from 1965, this 1975 safety film discusses the importance of wearing seatbelts while in vehicles and features interviews with racecar drivers Alan Johnson and Mark Donahue, interviews with everyday drivers, footage of crash impact tests conducted by UCLA, and plenty of footage of 1960s and 1970s vehicles driving on California’s streets, highways, and freeways. The film opens with footage of people watching one of the inaugural IROC races at Riverside International Raceway in the early 1970s, where drivers race their modified Porsche RSRs around the track. Driver Alan Johnson talks to the camera from his RSR about seatbelts (01:48). Cars move in traffic and drive along California highways. There is a good shot of cars driving over a bridge with arid landscape in the background (03:35). At a UCLA research test site, a car crashes into a parked car (03:45). Footage shows damage to the body of various vehicles that were in auto accidents. A group of young people walk to their cars (04:58). A mother tries to get her children to sit down in the car before driving them to school. Several “everyday” drivers give their thoughts on wearing seatbelts. A truck pulls a trailer along a highway (06:01). Footage from the point of view of a driver shows scenes from driving down a residential street. Cars drive on a freeway. There are shots of damaged cars at a wrecking yard (06:55). At UCLA’s Institute of Traffic and Engineering, dummies are used to measure impact of crashes (08:12); slow motion footage shows dummies being ejected from a car as it crashes into another car. A car crashes into the side of a school bus at the testing site, and footage from inside the bus shows the dummies being thrown into the ceiling and walls. A man dives off a diving board (09:52). Someone throws a dummy off a bridge. There are shots of people putting on their seatbelts, and one of a man securing his child into a car seat. Footage shows drivers buckling seatbelts, driving in their cars, and talking to the camera about the importance of using a seatbelt. The film shows scenes of cars driving down highways and additional footage from the IROC race at Riverside. Driver Mark Donahue climbs into a car and speaks to the camera about the importance of using a seat belt (this is not long before his fatal crash in Austria during a test run at the Austrian Grand Prix). Alan Johnson climbs into his family car and drives off. The film concludes with a few more shots of UCLA’s crash tests.
