This is a 1,583-mile area of wilderness in Montana’s Rocky Mountains consisting of glacier carved peaks and valleys which run through to the Canadian border. The film will point to various points of interest in the area. It is presented by Universal International (:09), produced by Dudley Pictures Corporation (:23) and narrated by Don McNamara. A deer and a brown bear (1:06) open the film as the area includes many species of North American wildlife (1:06). About a million visitors travel to the area annually (1:32). The Great Northern train pulls up at the East Glacier station (1:34) which is one of the two rail gateways to the park. Close to the station, is the Glacier Park hotel (2:00) and a couple dines at the hotel restaurant peering out one of the wide windows which offers picturesque views of the area (2:07). On the hotel grounds, the original inhabitants of the area; the Blackfeet Indians, conduct ceremonial dances (2:16). The red transport busses (2:47) take vacationers from the hotel and scenic shots of the mountains follow (2:58) as well as Swiftcurrent Lake (3:08). The famed Many Glacier Hotel (3:10) is one of the largest hotels ever built by Great Northern Railway. Around the hotel are some of the many hiking and riding trails (3:18). Horse back riding is considered one of the better ways to travel the rugged terrain (3:24). A woman is seen rock climbing as the national park offers a variety of recreational activities (3:38) including fishing (3:54). A fisherman’s catch is shown spread out in the grass next to his spinning rod (4:12). As vacationers continue to head northwards, they will cross into the Canadian section called Waterton Glacier International Peace Park (4:18) which was established between the US and Canada in 1932 (4:27). The Prince of Wales hotel rests on the Canadian side of Waterton Lake (4:44). Greeting visitors on a bridge are the men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (4:58) whose duties include policing the park as well as providing information to visitors (5:14). A car on Going to the Sun Highway, heading south back into the United States, passes St. Mary’s Lake (5:30). Logan Pass (5:50) along the continental divide, follows. The park’s largest lake best traversed by lake cruiser, is Lake McDonald (6:08). Of course, the highlight of any vacationer’s trip is a visit to a glacier (6:33). The over land Johnson Bernal glacier is about 35 city blocks wide and 400 feet deep in some parts (7:16). This glacier is actually slowly crawling through the land though the movement cannot be witnessed by the human eye (7:30). Tourists walk carefully across with ropes guided by an experienced mountaineer (7:45). The film begins to wrap up after the visitors creep to the edge of a crevice and peer into it’s vast depths (7:52). It concludes at (8:33). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
