<description>(ASM_029) RARE footage shot from Submarine USS Daniel Webster shows Cape Canaveral from ocean on May 22, 1964. Multiple excursions to sea from Port Canaveral for tests of its diving planes mounted on a mini-sail near the bow. This new design resulted in her nickname "Old Funny Fins".** Probably the ONLY COPY. Another space connection: The USS Daniel Webster SSB(N) 626 was a ballistic missile submarine. The MOST INTERESTING PART is probably NOT the tests themselves, but the views coming into and out of port as well as SHOTS OF THE CREW AT WORK. Also in the film: Destroyer 844 USS Perry, Tugboat "MARS", and Tugboat "CAMDEN of West Palm Beach Florida". Highlight Points... 00:00 Bow plane Tests 02:45 Coming back into port 04:05 Passed Destroyer 844 USS Perry at dock 04:40 Tugboat "MARS" alongside 04:55 Tugboat "CAMDEN of West Palm Beach Florida" alongside 07:48 Leaving port again 08:10 More Tests 10:17 Coming back into port 12:57 Another tug 13:06 Extreme Rudder swing 13:27 Tugboat "CAMDEN" disconnected. (Full name now clear.) 14:40 passing USS Perry again 15:34 Back at dock 16:25 Tug pulling it away from dock 17:45 Tugs Camden then Mars 18:10 Leaving port 18:18 More tests at sea again ** MORE RE: The unusual diving planes configuration... "This configuration, unique to US submarines, was an attempt to reduce the effect of porpoising. While successful, the "mini-sail" required to contain the operating mechanism reduced hydrodynamic efficiency and lowered her overall speed. During a mid-1970s overhaul, these unusual planes were removed and standard fairwater planes were installed."
