<description>This 1-minute, 17-second video clip from August 20, 2010 shows in-flight footage of NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) aircraft completing a second series of envelope-expansion flight tests with its telescope door open. After these flights, the SOFIA was fully cleared for astronomy missions at altitudes up to 45,000 feet and telescope elevations up to 58 degrees. After installation and checkout of the remaining systems, the airborne observatory began its first infrared astronomy missions in late 2010. The SOFIA aircraft is operated by NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center and based at Hangar 703 in Palmdale, CA.
