        <description>This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Battle for Britain 1940 (:28). Hitler walks out of a building with his entourage. He looks through binoculars at the White Cliffs of Dover. In London, sandbags are piled to the second floor of a building (:58). An air-raid shelter is shown at Buckingham Palace (1:10). London’s children gather to be evacuated (1:21). A neighborhood army practices drills (1:26). A woman civilian solder helps launch barrage balloons (1:34). Men and women civilian defense units man anti-aircraft and coastal guns. Cannons are fired. (1:44). August 8, 1940. Air sirens go off and people look up. The defense units move civilians off the street (2:11). Live footage of Germany’s Nazi bombers fill the sky and drop bombs on the merchant fleet below (2:28). England’s Air Force responds in Spitfires. Live footage is shown of a Nazi plane being fired up and crashing into the English Channel (3:08). Air raid calls cause civilians to stop working and grab military gear. One blows a whistle (4:08). Enemy aircraft approaches. People are shown in shelters, covering their ears. Above, buildings burst into flames (4:29). Firefighters spray water at the fire (4:46). The aftermath of burnt out buildings is shown (5:14). A “We are Open” sign is shown, and people emerge smiling from the underground shelters. Street clean-up begins (5:18). Babyland Follies 1926. From Kitty’s Dancing School in D.C., little girls dressed as vegetables, ducks, and rabbits perform. Costumed in top hats, teenage girls dance the Charleston (5:40). Personalities 1929  Philanthropist Julius Rosenwald stands outside a building (6:23). 1928, operatic soprano Grace Moore, wearing a fur coat and cloche hat, smiles for the camera (6:49). 1927, prosecutor Owen J. Roberts stands outside the courthouse for the trial of oilman Harry Sinclair (7:05).  Logging Train Leaps Its Tracks – Early 1920s. In Washington state, a heavily laden logging train has dumped its load. The logs are stacked alongside the tracks. Wreckage of the train is hoisted by crane (7:24). Church in the Sky 1925. The 23-floor First (United) Methodist Church of Chicago opens (8:09). Aviation Early 1930s. A self-landing biplane takes off and lands itself in New York. Inventor Professor A.A. Merrill is shown  (8:52). Fashions of the Day 1920. Women dressed in long coats and hats include Mrs. Warren Harding and Mrs. Vice President Marshall. Women are seated at a long table for a reception meal. A woman wears a hat covered in feathers (9:50). Sports. 1926, women athletes compete in the National Track and Field Championships in Philadelphia. The 100-yard dash and hammer throw are shown (10:31). 1925, men in one-piece bathing suits climb into longboats to race. People sit in open slowly moving trains so they can continue viewing the race on the Hudson (11:01).
