Specifically, the film seeks to illuminate sequences of behavior under multiple stimulus control. The film shows various clips from experiments using different test subjects, from a quail to a German Shepherd show dog. Behavior Theory or Behaviorism is a psychology theory that suggests that all behaviors are learned or acquired through a conditioning process. Film opens, opening credits (0:08). Quail inside clear glass/ plastic box pecks wall of box; Pecking record on monitor beside box (0:18). Homogenous Chains of Behavior: Close-up quail inside box responding to different SD light indicators (white, blue, red, green) which function as a conditioned reinforcer for the preceding response in the chain; Example of homogenous chain of behaviors where successive response have same topography (0:30). Another example of homogenous chains, however, instead of quail a young boy plays with apparatus featuring multicolored telegraph keys and corresponding lights that measure sequence of responses (1:36). Heterogeneous Chains of Behavior (those tested outside controlled laboratory environment): Pigeon inside apparatus depicting magazine feeder training; Light and sound as SDs indicating when pigeon should eat (2:17). Written out paradigm describing heterogeneous chain used to condition pigeon’s behavior (2:37). Pigeon inside different apparatus, expanding upon previous experiment, except here pecking is a new SD reinforcer to shape new response; Red disc tells pigeon to peck while black disc tells pigeon to turn in clockwise direction (3:07-8:00). New written out paradigm describing heterogeneous chain used to condition pigeon’s behavior (8:02). Another pigeon inside different apparatus working under a three component heterogeneous chain: Ring bell, turn at sign of black circle, peck triangle to receive food (8:07). Written out paradigm describing three-component heterogeneous chain used to condition pigeon’s behavior (8:53). Same pigeon, expansion on previous experiment, fourth component of perch to reach bell is added; Step-by-step explanation of how pigeon acquires new behavior through conditioning (9:04-13:36). Updated written out paradigm describing addition of fourth component to heterogeneous chain’s impact on conditioning pigeon’s behavior (13:38). SDs present when chain is learned gradually dropped out: Woman stands in grass field with German Shepherd show dog and conducts obedience exercise using four commands, “stay, get it, out, heel,” to get dog to jump over hurdle and retrieve dumbbell (13:46). Written out paradigm of conditioning for dog’s behavior (15:03). Example of chain containing alternative responses rather than sequence of SDs with same response: Same woman with German Shepherd in field, dog sent out between two jumps and waits for instruction for which to jump over based on hand signals of handler (15:17). Written out paradigm of alternative responses conditioning for dog’s behavior (15:58). More complex chain sequences: Interactions between blind man, guide-dog, and environment as he walks through busy city landscape; Various spontaneous SDs based on stimuli of environment i.e. man’s voice giving dog commands, curb of sidewalk, dog tapping man’s foot SD for him to cross street (16:14-17:45). Aversive stimulus in environment through use of sound: Trainer walks into traffic, gets close to 1961 Volkswagen (VW) Beetle and hits car to indicate going into traffic bad behavior; Trainer walks into awning in front of liquor store and makes loud noise (17:47-18:41). Dog taken through green park, trainer makes dramatic fall after stepping into pothole (18:44). Closing credits (19:43). Film ends (19:48). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to donate to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via the weblink below. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
