Ed works in a highly demanding position in the NASA program at the age of thirty-one. The film follows some aspects of his life and career. It shows the preparation for a space probe launching highlighting the intricate work involved and pressures experienced by employees of the NASA program. An on-staff doctor notices negative symptoms of ED's smoking habit. Evaluation leads to a cause for concern and further medical evaluation in order to ensure his capabilities to perform under the demanding conditions of space exploration. Through this narrative, viewers learn the hazardous effects and dangerous risks to health caused by smoking. They understand various stressors in a person's daily life which might lead to smoking or other harmful habits. The film also shows a glimpse into how cancer is diagnosed and treated. Symptoms of addiction are explored including the effect on relationships. It concludes on a positive note for the future that Ed might successfully be able to return to work. The first section of the film discusses the challenges of the space age. It opens with images of the John F. Kennedy Space Center (:09) and close shots of the rocket launch control center with a Saturn launch vehicle  (:14). Ground control (:41) maintains communication with technicians leading into the launching. Mission directors wait anxiously with clipboards and headsets (:45). The cost in dollars and man hours behind the project is relayed (:52). Ed sucks down a cigarette (:53) succumbing to unrelenting pressure (:52). He begins to cough (1:03) as narration explains the necessity of maintaining good health in order to manage stress. Close shots watch the countdown clock (1:44) and the launching follows (1:52). Directors celebrate following the launch (2:10). Ed stubs his cigarette out and the on-staff doctor presses him over symptoms (2:20). Ed explains stressors and pressure he is experiencing (3:19). The doctor pulls his medical file and discusses Ed’s educational and personal background (3:31). He mentions coughing up blood (3:54). The doctor notices a small localized wheezing while listening to Ed’s lungs through a stethoscope (4:40). He points to a lesion in x-ray images of Ed’s lungs (5:11) explaining causes behind such a lesion (5:53). Ed crumples his pack of tobacco (6:44). At home showing signs of nicotine withdrawal (7:41). He continues to smoke in spite of his diagnosis (7:56).  A National Airlines DC-8 delivers Ed to Houston (9:25). At the doctor visit (10:31), the doctor expresses distaste for cigarettes. Ed and his wife talk smoking habits (11:10). The pair argue showing the effects of addiction on relationships (11:15). The doctor points to the surgeon general’s warning on the pack (12:02). He pulls a vial of nicotine (12:17) and tobacco (12:23) showing the amount of each which passes through a heavy smoker’s body daily. He performs a demonstration to show the effect of smoking on a person’s lungs (13:02) and relays the number of annual deaths caused by smoking. Ed undergoes a series of tests (13:38). X-ray images (14:17) are checked. A bronchoscope is used to further probe Ed’s lungs (14:56). The couple is sent to the Houston Astrodome as they await results (16:14). A Gulf Oil advertisement hangs above the field (16:17). They return to the waiting room to chain smoke (16:58). Ed receives a diagnosis of carcinoma (17:46). Ed is prepared for surgery (19:09). He receives general anesthesia (19:34). Close shots show the surgeons tools (19:49), the incision across his abdomen (19:53) and the procedure for cancer removal. The stress involved in surgery mirrors that of the NASA launching. Surgeons pull a small portion of his right lung (21:56). The other lung is biopsied (22:01). Microscopic images of lungs of a nonsmoker (22:08) are compared to a section of Ed’s lung (22:14).  The doctor stresses they must quit smoking (23:33).
