Made in an optimistic era, before the Communists gained the advantage and American losses surged, the film does not hint at the defeat that would come. "In the final victory," explains the narrator, "it will not be who holds the ground, but who holds the allegiance of the people that win this war." The film, which likely dates to 1965 or 66, shows images of U.S. Marines inspecting a captured Vietnamese village, including looking at underground installations at the :30 mark. At 1:00, villagers are given food, baths, medical care, and other assistance. Vietnamese farmers and fishermen are seen, caught between the demands of the Viet Cong and the American forces and their allies. At 1:56, American helicopters arrive carrying Marines, including doctors who provide medical care, and G.I.s who give them rations. At 6:22, an African American Marine speaks with villagers. At 6:40, riverine operations are seen with American light ships and swift boats working the river. Also what appears to be LVTP-5 (Landing Vehicle, Tracked, Personnel) amphibious armored fighting vehicles are seen. These were designed by the BorgWarner company and built by FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) along with a few other companies. It was first accepted into service in 1956. Some 1,124 basic units were produced, plus the specialist variants, and many saw action in the Vietnam War. At 7:30, Marines are seen on patrol, and through the end of the film working with Vietnamese civilians.
