        <description>This film "Cavalcade of Aviation" shows the history of aviation beginning with the Wright Bros. and spanning through 1940. World War I forced advances in aviation history. This film includes various stunt fliers and pioneer pilots. (Note: Two versions of this film exist, this extended version, and a short.) The film opens with the Wright Brothers first flight on December 17th, 1903. Wilbur appears (:11) adjusting the wing of the Wright Flier at Kitty Hawk. Propellers spin (:15) and the craft zooms off. Glen Curtiss appears (:24). Harriet Quimby (:35) was the first female to receive her pilot certificate in 1911. WW1 broke out in 1914 (:52). Early fighter crafts such as the Curtiss Jenny (1:09) appear. Pioneer aviators include (1:15) Eddie Rickenbacker. He flew for the 94th Aero Squadron. The SPAD XIIIS is pictured (1:21) in France.  He sits in the cockpit (1:26). The pair take to the skies (1:31). Footage follows from the co-pilots seat (1:37). Woodrow Wilson holds the first piece of mail to travel by air (1:58). A vintage air mail truck appears (2:01) in New York. The mail is slipped into a sack (2:05). Second Lieutenant George Leroy (2:08) meets with Wilson. The plane takes off with the first parcel of mail here (2:17). Battleship Alabama (2:19) took part in the first air to sea combat. Images follow of the aviators involved in the conflict (2:28). Payloads are unleashed (2:33). A massive explosion erupts on the water (2:45). More bombs fall out (2:54). Battleships lay to waste (3:05). The US Naval Air Arm gained strength from the war (3:22).  Curtis Jenny dive bombers fly in formation (3:25). A stunning view captures the aircraft carrier peeling away as fighter planes take off (3:35). Scenes of aviation fiascos follow (3:49). A strange craft drops at the end of the runway (3:58). Another craft debuts in 1934 (4:10). It takes off (4:22) briefly. A rocket plane is shot off and crashes in the snow (4:54). A rocket bike (5:00) ends in disaster (5:09). The umbrella plane soars to the air (5:34). A man attaches wings to himself (5:41). The gyro plane appears with inventor Dr. Valentine Newbauer (5:52). Newbauer's protective gear is highlighted (6:00). The Auto gyro touches down (6:29). Igor Sikorsky (6:42) flies his first helicopter in Russia. Youth present scale models (6:57) for model plane week. A glider model is sent soaring (7:22). Aviation hall of famers include Lindberg (7:51) as he climbs into the spirit of St. Louis taking off for Paris. Clarence Chamberlain appears (8:06). The craft crashes (8:11). A man stands atop the wing (8:33) mid-flight. Will Rogers and Wiley Post are pictured (8:50). The pair perished during their Alaskan flight in August of 1935. Amelia Earhart (8:52) appears. Ruth Elders (9:01) is pictured before Ruth Nichols; a speed and altitude record holder (9:05). Lowell Bales lost his life (9:31) on the Model Z at 300 mph. The Brothers Monteverde crashed in 1935 while attempting to take off from Floyd Bennet airfield (9:53). They head down the runway for Portugal (9:59). The plane is overloaded (10:02). A wing is clipped and the plane crashes (10:07). A rocket type plane appears before the White House (10:20). It malfunctions (19:25). The Akron airship accident of 1912 is pictured (10:39). Two ground crewmen were taken up with the craft in a guest of wind (10:44). Another overloaded air ship (11:01) crashes. The Hindenburg dirigible (11:16) takes to it's last Atlantic crossing on May 6th, 1937 in New Jersey. Guests aboard ship are pictured (11:22). The blimp crashes and erupts into flames (11:25). Italy invaded Ethiopia in October of 1935. General Billy Mitchell's words are heard about the occasion (12:05). A note informs viewers Europe was under attack as WW2 broke out (13:00). The Luftwaffe fly over Europe (13:12). Japanese bombers head for the Pacific (13:16). A Heinkel HE-111 (13:13) flies through the air. Dunkerque appears under attack (13:53). Scenes follow from Britain’s evacuation (13:57) and the Battle of the Atlantic (14:12). Paratroopers parachutes explode in the air (14:49). FDR’s call for air support follows (15:46). Flight tests (16:13). Industry scenes show airplanes being constructed (16:38). The Curtiss P-40 (17:39) the Martin B-26 (17:48) and the Airacuda (18:32) follow.
