The film dates to sometime after July 1948, when the De Havilland Vampire became the first jet aircraft to equip peacetime units of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, gradually replacing the de Havilland Mosquito in this capacity. The film is narrated by BBC radio reporter Charles Gardner. It features a weekend flier and British salesmen named David Waite as he slips off from a long work week as a salesmen for the TSC Birmingham sales office for a weekend in blue skies. David's secretary passes off paperwork at the Birmingham sales office (:23). He tips his hat and makes for the door at the close of the work week (:28); skies in mind. His smart black late 1940’s Austin A40 Devon (:34) heads for the "Country Club". Black hole windows crush against the white stucco building (:42). David trades his civilian hat for pilot's cap (:44). A British jet airliner shoots over the run way (:48). He swings into the 605 Squadron RAF headquarters (:52) in Birmingham. Austin 7's run around (:59) loaded with RAF squadron service men. Paperwork is sifted into "pending" "laugh and tear it up" and "out" (1:12). Pilots discuss prior to an upcoming flight (1:28). Faces of the pilots are zoomed in on (1:35); some are small commercial artists. Ground crews wheel in oxygen tanks in order to service the grounded planes (1:51). A pilot grabs his oxygen mask from his locker (2:15). An archer practices target practice (2:20). A series of De Havilland DH113’s (2:27) stand in a row. Pilots clamor into the de Havilland Vampire (2:35). Shots follow from within the terminal (2:45) as engines kick on. The archer and pilots ready themselves for flight (2:49). Vampires fly off in formation (2:57) and later break off (3:29). The mother of an RAF pilot watches his daughter play (3:42) in the yard. Weekend fliers practice drills (4:04). Princess Margaret (4:16) presents the fliers with their standard. The banner is zoomed in on showing various battle honors (4:30). A Luftwaffe fighter plane crumbles under gunfire (4:26). RAF planes strafe enemy naval vessels (4:29). The film concludes with an acknowledgement of support of weekend fliers in maintaining RAF Auxiliary Air Force in readiness (4:40). The de Havilland Vampire is a British jet fighter which was developed and manufactured by the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It was the second jet fighter to be operated by the RAF, after the Gloster Meteor, and the first to be powered by a single jet engine. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction.
