In early December of that year, during the initial phase of the Pacific War, Japanese forces launched an air raid on Singapore and began their invasion of Malaya, aiming to neutralize British naval power and capture strategic territory. Despite facing limited defenses and miscalculations by British commanders, the Japanese campaign ultimately led to the rapid fall of Malaya and the subsequent surrender of Singapore in February 1942. 0:00 Japanese military column on jungle road. 0:25 Observers in a basket below an observation balloon or blimp (also sometimes used for anti-aircraft protection) 0:33 General Tomoyuki Yamashita and staff review strategy for the assault on Singapore 0:53 Artillery gun crew and observers target British positions 1:59 Title card: everything is ready 2:05 Artillery barrage begins 2:40 Title card: "Showa era February, Total attack on Signapore", in other words -- February 1942 2:50 Japanese Mitsubishi Ki-21, formal designation "Type 97 Heavy Bomber" raid British positions around Singapore 4:51 Columns of smoke rise from bomb damage, probably from strikes on oil storage facilities 5:12 Title card: February 9th, Midnight. (On February 9, 1942, the Battle of Singapore intensified with Japanese landings on the northwestern coast of the island, specifically at Sarimbun Beach. This marked the beginning of a major Japanese offensive to capture the British stronghold. The Battle of Sarimbun Beach saw fierce fighting between Australian and Japanese troops, with the Japanese ultimately gaining control. Simultaneously, the Japanese also captured Tengah airfield, further weakening the Allied defenses. ) 5:47 Title card: successful landing against the enemy 6:03 Map showing the Singapore River, the Causeway and the airfield 6:18 Japanese infantry on the move, near the Singapore Causeway. (The Causeway was a vital link between Malaya and Singapore, was deliberately destroyed by Allied engineers on January 31, 1942, to prevent advancing Japanese forces from crossing the Straits of Johor. After the last British troops crossed, two explosions created a significant gap in the structure and severed the water pipeline, delaying the Japanese invasion. The Japanese subsequently built a temporary bridge, but the damage slowed their progress as they invaded Singapore island on February 8, 1942.) 6:27 Japanese troops moving into the jungle 6:44 Japanese bomber aircraft continue raids 7:04 Aerial view of shattered Tengah airfield 7:13 Japanese artillery continues barrage 7:33 Occupation of the airfield 8:04 Captured Royal Army troops are shown 8:13 General Yamashita and staff on the move 8:26 General Yamashita issues orders 8:33 Title card: A letter of surrender is dropped on enemy positions 8:39 An aircraft drops the package containing the surrender request 8:47 Kawasaki Ki-18 Japanese twin engine bomber is shown 9:03 title card: enemy finally (?) 9:07 Troops fire artillery in the final push towards Singapore 10:27 Japanese Zero or similar aircraft flies over artillery positions 10:55 Aerial views of burning British positions; aerial bombing continues 11:34 Japanese infantryman prepares bayonet, and his unit charges up a hill towards enemy positions.
