This particular episode from the mid to late 60’s takes a look at the ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded in April of 1866 by Henry Bergh. It opens with shots of kittens and puppies available for adoption in one of their shelters (:18). Host and narrator, Bill Owens, is seen at the New York City ASPCA which is referred to by workers as the ‘world’s biggest dog house’ (1:02). The veterinary and hospital clinic of the shelter is pointed to (1:37) as well as one of their blue animal ambulances (1:40). The animal port at the Kennedy airport is equipped to handle travel accommodations for nearly any animal (1:44). Owners and dogs are trained in obedience classes (1:52). Monkeys play within a cage at the miniature zoo of the educational department (1:57). A blue traveling ‘Arkmobile’ is used to visit schools and playgrounds (2:00). Scenes from inside one of the nine ASPCA shelters based in New York follow (2:21) where lost animals are given temporary shelter. A woman is reunited with her lost dog (3:00). The adoption services of the ASPCA locate homes for thousands of animals annually (3:14). Shots of kittens available for adoption (3:23) lead to one family filling out paperwork for a kitten they have chosen to adopt (3:51). A supply of food is donated to each person whom adopts an animal (3:58). One family walks through the kennel looking for a dog to adopt (4:33). The dog they chose receives a thorough exam and inoculation by the ASPCA veterinary doctor (5:15). Other animals which the ASPCA locates homes for include horses (6:01), goats (6:03), birds (6:06) and monkeys (6:08). Junior members; youth volunteers, are seen at the miniature zoo of the shelter (7:09). A group of blind children learn to identify animals such as the Guinea pig by touch (8:03). The kids work to identify a bunny rabbit next (9:39). Owners walk their dogs in an obedience class (10:40). An ASPCA vehicle pulls up to the animal port at the New York Kennedy International Airport (13:48). Animals are loaded to be transported in crates (13:58). Shots follow of various animals’ crates ready to be transported (14:31). Crates shown here are headed for a United flight (14:45). A six-month-old royal Bengal tiger is filmed as she is to be on her way to the International Pet Festival in New York (14:56). Other animals moving through the airport are a toucan bird (16:15), a boa constrictor (16:18) and a family of mice (16:22). One of the animal cages is cleaned, steamed and disinfected (16:32). One worker at the airport removes bedding material from a cage of Chimpanzees (16:54). The kitchen of the animal port follows where meals are prepared for the traveling animals (17:23). Monkeys are fed bananas (17:30). A goat was donated to the ASPCA which has since become a permanent resident of the animal port (17:59). Bill Owens visits race horses (18:21) and shows how these animals are transported (19:02). At the veterinary clinic, a veterinarian inspects a dachshund (19:22). George Bauer works as the manager of the ASPCA animal port (19:35) and resides in the building. A motto followed by the employees here is ‘Handle with love’ (20:07). Bill then stands near one of thirty animal ambulances used by the New York ASPCA (20:09). The following episode was to take a ride with the animal ambulances to show how the animal rescue squad goes to work in New York. This film was produced by Jules Power Productions in association with ABC News and Public Interest (21:42).
