<description>"Castles and Castanets" is a Pan Am Airlines travelogue film from the 1960s, when the 707 jetliner made Europe easily accessible to the American public for the first time. The film playfully begins with a burro ride, before getting down the serious business of showing off modern and historic Spain. It invites viewers to embark on a Pan-American travel adventure, highlighting the safe and pleasant experience of traveling by "buo." The narrative explores Spain's rich history, from castles and legends like Don Quixote to the diverse influences of Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors. The simple yet busy work of the peasants and fishermen is shown, as well as shipbuilders and farmers, and bullfights. Madrid is shown at about the 13 minute mark, with its double-decker buses, neon signs, and bustling downtown. The south and Granada are shown at about the 15 minute point, along with the Generalife and Alhambra. Montserrat is also shown at the 22 minute mark. Holy Week and other Catholic rites are shown, and the vivid life of the Spaniards who love to dance, drink, and enjoy life. The narrative concludes with reflections on the journey home and the lasting memories of Spain. The film was directed by the famed filmmaker Henry Strauss. Strauss was an industrial film producer who lived through the Great Depression and WWII. Learning from these experiences, his company, Henry Strauss Productions, Inc. produced films and management training films for most of the large corporations in post-war America, including Pan American Airlines, GE and AT&amp;T.
