It promotes the Combined Action Program and the Combined Action Platoon. During the Vietnam War, Combined Action Platoons paired squads of Marines with a local Vietnamese militia, or the Popular Forces and assigned them to a Vietnamese village. The goals were to offer the inhabitants better protection against the Vietcong and to deny sanctuary to any Vietcong soldiers. The merits of the Combined Action Platoon are illustrated throughout the film by demonstrating how the American soldiers work with and learn from the Vietnamese Popular Forces.
