Scenes of the Hydrographic Office and barracks were filmed beginning May 9, 1944. Hydrographic Office history records that, “Photo Science Lab photographers aboard to make motion pictures of WAVES for a BuPers (Bureau of Naval Personnel) Procurement “Short” to be released by Warner Brothers.” The main character, the mother, is an actress, but the other WAVES appearing in the film are real WAVES. The film begins 10 years after WWII is over and is set in Illinois. At the start, a small plane -- an Erco Ercoupe -- is flown by a woman lands in a field. The woman, her daughter and their dog get out of the plane and have a picnic. The girl looks at a magazine and finds an article called “When Mother was a WAVE.” The girl, named Judy, asks her mother, “what did you do in the last big war?” The mother says she was a WAVE. At 2:45 the mother explains that she was stationed in Washington, D.C. Images show lots of service people walking around famous monuments and sights in Washington. The mother explains that men were sent to fight and woman replaced them in homefront jobs. At 3:20 the mother is shown in her WAVE uniform leading other WAVES. At 3:30 she is shown at her job in the Progress Section of the Hydrographic Office. The following scene shows WAVE Ensign Turner, a former architect, at work designing a battleship. At 4:00, a new battleship is launched. At 4:15, WAVE Quarters is shown is Washington, D.C. - housing. At 4:20, Ship’s Service is shown, an eating facility and soda fountain. At 4:36, Helen Mozell from Philadelphia is featured as a WAVE making charts. At 5:00, the commanding officer is shown supervising WAVES making charts. At 5:15, maps are seen being printed at the Hydrographic Office. Various combat scenes are shown from 5:24-5:45. WAVES are seen swimming in the large swimming pool at WAVE Quarters at 5:46. WAVE Mary Jane Hunter from Cleveland is featured as working at the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts. At 6:04, she is seen modeling survival gear for soldiers. 6:27 shows items that WAVES purchase to supply the Navy. At 6:38 at WAVE Quarters, a Navy man is shown relaying a story of a battle to WAVES. At 7:20 WAVES are shown working at the Bureau of Naval Personnel and it is explained how their work affects Navy men on ships. At 7:47 a soldier is seen receiving the Navy Cross. At 8:11, WAVES are seen looking through the fence at the White House. Lee Hornsby of St. Louis is featured as a WAVE working at a Link Trainer, a flight simulator. At 9:20 WAVES are seen marching at training facilities with superimposed battle scenes. At 9:50 the film cuts back to the picnic at the beginning.
