At 1:08, sunken ships are visible in the harbor. 1:16: piles of wrecked buildings are visible, and apparently the concrete is being used to make ballast either for the railroad or to stabilize ramps in the port area. 1:28: an Army dump truck drops ballast into the harbor to make a ramp. 1:47: an improvised ramp is shown, made out of concrete debris and stone. 2:03: underwater mines are shown being detonated and/or debris cleared in the harbor with explosives. 2:42: A prisoner of war enclosure or camp. Captured German troops are shown attending to their dead, who lie in a trench at the side of a road. 3:13: a deceased German soldier is placed on a stretcher and taken away. 3:23: the rucksack of a fallen soldier is cut away so that the body can be easily moved. 3:47: a destroyed German tank is shown being inspected by American troops. 3:58: German or American soldier enters the tank, possibly to look for bodies. 4:07: a badly burned corpse is removed from the tank. 4:26: captured German soldiers' sour facial expressions are seen as another burned corpse is handled. 4:45: a truck is loaded with bodies. 4:55: A wrecked Sherman tank is visible 5:13: a salvage crew moves in to try to remove the Sherman tank and other vehicles. A blow torch is lit. 5:30: the tank is moved using cables to haul it out. 5:53: smoke billows from a French town as a fire rages. 6:25: a Landing Ship Tank is shown in the harbor, loading troops. It is US-212, commissioned 6 July 1943, LT. Alfred Carr, USN, in command. This vessel earned two battle stars for World War II service including Invasion of Normandy, 6 to 25 June 1944. 6:43: troops board the LST for movement to another part of the front, or possibly to R&R. Jeeps tow artillery into the LST's hull. 7:24: occupants of a liberated French town greet liberators with an improvised parade, including a drummer who sits atop a truck. At 7:40 women who slept with German troops are given haircuts to the skin, denoting their betrayal of France. At 7:45 a male collaborator covers his face with his hands, while behind him another man holds up a sign (which is not legible). 7:58: The newly shorn ladies face the community, in total shame, while members of the town mock them. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
