Sharff for Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. Narrated by Athena Lorde and Jim Boles, the film tells the story of Hadassah’s activities in America and Israel during the 1950s and is told from the perspective of the husband of a Hadassah activist wanting to share the importance of his wife's Zionist activities. The film features footage of the Hadassah national headquarters in Midtown Manhattan and the Hadassah medical centers in Jerusalem. Hadassah is an American Jewish volunteer women's organization that was founded in 1912 by Henrietta Szold. Film opens, aerial view Ossining, New York (0:09). Husband begins narrating over footage of wife as she canvasses for Hadassah at neighbor’s house and local supermarket, knits crafts for fundraiser, bakes cookies (0:53). Wife rushes into 1955 Buick Special Rivera Coupe, other woman rushes into Ford Crestline (3:02). Hadassah meeting sign, inside wife celebrated for being “woman of the month” (3:23). Footage changes to trip of wife to New York City to visit national Hadassah chapter, wife begins to narrate (4:23). Wife stands on corner of 52nd Street and Park Avenue, looks at Hadassah building (perhaps demolished, today Park Avenue Plaza) (4:32). Busy lobby of building, Hebrew and English writing (5:08). Hustle and bustle of mailroom, hundreds of letters and kits being sorted (6:13). Addressograph department, clacking of addressograph machine at work (6:38). Wife directed to second floor, visits finance department, staff member shows her financial report document and shows how funds are used (7:26). Wife visits membership chairman’s office, tiny office, woman busy on phone (9:24). Third floor: Wife joins group touring the Hadassah headquarters, man hands out copies of Hadassah newsletter featuring articles on McCarran Act, feature on Henrietta Szold, political importance to U.S. of arms for Israeli Defense Forces (9:52). Staff Hebrew lesson (10:45). Door opens to President’s office where chairman, treasurer, other executives sit around conference table; Various accolades and photos of founder Henrietta Szold decorate room (11:05). Youth Aliya office (11:28). Vocational Education Division, women inside working on puppet crafts, embroidering dress (12:17). HMO-Medical Center Division, tour ends, office empty so wife looks at 3-D models of building plans for medical campus (13:00). Wife pokes head in on board meeting happening on 5th floor, meeting discussing matters of fellowships and fundraising efforts, gets attention of her chairwoman (14:35). Visual aids department, visual aids chairwoman painting displays (16:00). Wife follows chairwoman to her department, promotion, and looks through various fliers, manuals, pamphlets etc. (16:48). Movie department, movie chairwoman looks through 16mm film reel (17:16). Wife enters small viewing theater to watch Hadassah produced newsreel, footage changes to color and plays the newsreel about Hadassah’s new volunteer corps called Ya’al (17:38). Female Israeli Hadassah volunteer rushes out of house in white jacket and dashes off, catches Hadassah transport (Ford Parklane) to Hadassah-Seligsberg School in Jerusalem (18:03). Volunteers stop in courtyard to observe young Mizrahi Jewish women sitting at looms embroidering and weaving based on traditions from Morocco, Yemen (19:00). Ya’al car drives along Street of the Prophets, volunteers pickup kids recovering from polio and other diseases for field trip visiting different Hadassah sites: Youth Aliyah settlement/ kibbutz with emphasis on agricultural skills for Mizrahi, Sephardic Jewish youth (19:38). Mother and child welfare center: Pregnant women have lunch and learn about nutrition (21:49). Ein Karem: Bulldozer breaks ground for new Hadassah medical center (23:25). Hadassah Jerusalem hospital: Nurses distribute books to patients in courtyard, volunteers making surgical dressings, nurses read to the blind (24:15). Scientist in lab uses amniotic fluid to test for baby’s gender, footage of baby born, father stands happily outside of hospital (25:59). Footage changes back to black-and-white, wife’s closing words after being inspired from film and visit to headquarters; Husband’s closing words (27:17). Film ends (28:16).
