<description>The Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology demonstrator, one of two remotely piloted vehicles, is prepared for flight at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. Once at altitude, HiMAT is air launched from the NB-52B and lands on its skids. HiMAT is constructed from composite materials such as fiberglass and graphite, which adds structural strength and reduces its weight. Knowledge gained in composite construction from the subscale experimental airplane strongly influenced other advanced research aircraft, and the materials are now used extensively on commercial and military aircraft. The wing allowed for vast increases in maneuverability and brought about far-reaching advances in digital flight control systems, which can monitor and automatically correct for potential flight hazards.
