<description>Rest Assured is a 1955 RKO-PATHE Screenliner detailing the scope of running America’s major hotels. The film begins with shots of several famous hotels (00:28), including Hotel America, Hotel Astor, Hollywood Hotel, Mayflower Hotel, and the Wellington Hotel. When a guest arrives at a hotel’s busting lobby (00:50), they have little understanding of the work it takes to run such an establishment. In fact, running a major hotel is comparable to being mayor of a small city. The Hotel Resident and management (01:10) are constantly looking for ways to improve the vast services offered by the hotel. One major aspect of running a hotel are overseeing electric power (01:27), which provides power for lights, refrigeration, and ice production (01:45). Another is the procurement and preparation of millions of pounds of food (02:04). High-end hotel kitchens employ specialty cooks (02:25) who not only prepare meals but also design new foods to stay competitive in the culinary field. Chefs prepare pastries, ice cream, and much more—all of which is routed through the serving kitchen (03:27) on the way to awaiting guests. Giant dishwashers (03:34) sterilize the steady return of dishes and silverware. Naturally, cleanliness is of the most importance in the hotel industry, and some first-class hotels use the latest technology—like an ultraviolet ray sterilizer (03:58)—to kill germs and keep their facilities clean. Laundry is another massive undertaking (04:15) in the operation of a hotel, with major hotels employing up to 150 to deal with washing and mending the linen. The scale required for furnishing hotel rooms result in many hotels building their own furniture; in one case, a hotel employs a team of six men to build the required furniture (05:02). Other significant areas in operating a large hotel are key production, security, and lost and found (05:45). The lengths hotels go to take care of the health and wellbeing of their guests can be astonishing: some hotels go as far as to provide hydrotherapy (06:00), an in-house dental clinic (06:10), and a small operating room (06:17) for minor surgery to ensure their guests are taken care of. And, of course, many high-end hotels offer spa treatments for guests, such as figure-slimming machines (06:21). Hotels maintain extensive switchboards staffed with a dozen operators (06:43) to manage incoming, outgoing, and in-house calls, turning calls into messages for guests that are sent through pneumatic tubes (06:54) before being delivered to a guest’s room. Hotels may also feature print shops (07:03) and first-rate entertainment with hit shows (07:22). The film concludes with shots of a city skyline and several hotel buildings.
