The film is set at the US Steel Research Campus in Monroeville and covers some of the important experiments that scientist are performing there. The scientists use the latest technology to develop new steel alloys and reduce hydrogen content, while also performing necessary structural integrity experiments. The overall message of the film is that the private sector is important for the financing of research that improves the everyday lives of Americans, from tin cans to buildings. The film shows United States Steel at the height of the company's dominance of the steel industry. The film was directed by James Petrie, a cameraman, editor, and director who made training and motivational films with Louis de Rochemont and via Potter, Orchard & Petrie, whose slogan was "The Precise Purpose Movie." 0:08 “Paths of Steel” presented by United States Steel, 0:13 narrated by George Hicks, 0:27 a scientist performing an experiment in a lab, 1:25 the campus of the United States Steel Research in Monroeville, PA, 2:39 a scientist performing an experiment on surface films in a lab, 3:34 an employee at the glass blowing department of U.S.S.
