His career spanned six decades as he directed at least 50 films. He is known to be one of the most influential figures of the history of cinema. The footage is of and filmed by Hitchcock as well as by his wife and collaborator Alma Reville. This portion of the feature mostly shows images of Alma and Pat playing together with some footage from behind the scenes of one of Alfred’s hits called “Blackmail” released in 1929. The film opens with images of a boat moving on water as the family had taken a trip to Europe for research for some of Alfred’s films (:28). Their young daughter, Pat takes the boat’s steering wheel (:32). Alma and Pat walk up stone steps (:47). They appear to be at Nesso on Lake Como in Italy (:53). Tiny boats dot the water ahead (1:37). Pat sprints through the garden (9:31). Alfred takes to his bicycle, awkwardly, again (11:30). He reads over a script (12:16). Pat appears to practice a frightened look (12:52) for the camera man. A brass band appears (13:25). The little girl eats supper (14:21) with her mother (14:26). A house maid steps from the cottage door (16:38) and Pat drags out another house maid (16:59). They use a baby carriage to transport bottles of champagne (17:53). Alfred and a friend pretend to eat bananas backwards (19:46). Alma picks flowers in the field (20:21). Alfred walks with his mother, Emma Jane Hitchcock (21:07). John Longden delivers tea to guests (21:48). Scenes from the set (21:55) of Blackmail show Alfred directing Anny Ondra. Alfred; notorious for his bad behavior with his female stars, plays with Anny’s dress (22:25). In this scene, Anny’s character attempts to fight off advances from John Longden portraying an artist (23:23). Alfred appears dressed in a long black coat and top hat (23:58). The group visits a carousel ride (25:05). They return to the sea (26:21) for another voyage. The captain leans against the railing (26:57). A tennis game is played aboard the ship (27:15) as gulls fly above. Back at their home in Sussex (27:37) a friend flips through a magazine on the couch. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
