In April 1949, representatives from Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal joined the United States in signing the NATO agreement. President of the United States Harry Truman speaks. Truman signs the bill. Title: Ecuador Earthquake. People run as the ground shakes and buildings fall. Thousands injured or dead. Those rescued are carried out. People search for the injured. Some injured are moved cautiously over raging waters with rope and pulleys. People move debris and people (4:42-7:01). Title: Mexican Volcano Erupts. Volcano erupts. Mount Paricutin spews smoke. Molten rock spews forth from the volcano, people try and get close to film it but the heat pushes them back. Title: Indianapolis Auto Classic. The 33rd International 500-Mile Sweepstakes was an automobile race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Monday, May 30, 1949. Drivers lose control and crash. A car crashes into a wall, loses a wheel, and bursts into flames. Other cars go around the flames. Bill Holland is the winner (7:02-8:38). End credits (8:39-8:43). Lucky Lady II is a United States Air Force Boeing B-50 Superfortress that became the first airplane to circle the world nonstop. Its 1949 journey, assisted by in-flight refueling, lasted 94 hours and 1 minute. The plane later suffered an accident, and today only the fuselage is preserved.
