The mid-1960s film opens with Dr. Robert Gordon, a U.S. Navy ship’s dental officer, working on a patient in an exam room before beginning to speak about his relationships with other navy medical team members on board (00:25-01:35). At 01:36, the doctor begins a flashback of his journey to working with the Navy, detailing his time finishing medical school and his road from the Naval Reserve to the Navy Dental Corps. From 08:10 to 09:50, the doctor reflects on his daily life in the corps including his standard duties and his satisfying naval community home life with his wife, Anne, and their son Brian. At 09:55, Dr. Gordon reflects on his first assignment at sea aboard the USS Toledo navy heavy cruiser as part of the Pacific Fleet. Visits to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Waikiki and other destinations are shown with brief footage (10:40-11:00). The joys of the journey back to home port begins at 12:00 with depictions of naval officers and others reuniting with their family members. Family visits and leisurely drives in San Francisco are shown to emphasize why the narrator loves his time in the Navy Dental Corps so much (15:05-16:35). Retired dental officer Captain Bingham is described starting at 16:40. Dr. Gorden’s interactions with the captain are depicted, underscoring the conversations they have that reiterate all the benefits of their profession. The film shows the world-class National Naval Medical Center located in Bethesda, Maryland. Up-close footage of dental procedures at the center are shown following the introduction of the center (18:31-20:20). At 24:30, the film concludes with Dr. Gordon calling his wife to tell her the good news: he has been given a staff position at the dental school. The Dental Corps of the United States Navy consists of naval officers who have a doctorate in either dental surgery (DDS) or dental medicine (DMD) and who practice dentistry for Sailors and Marines to ensure optimal oral health. The U.S. Navy Dental Corps was established by an Act of Congress in 1912. Its membership consists of dental officers of the Navy and the United States Navy Reserve. The primary mission of the Corps is to prevent or remedy dental conditions that may interfere with the performance of duty by members of the active naval forces. In overseas locations, they sometimes also treat dependent family members.
